(U-14 league) St Paul?s defeat Clan Na Gael        2004-04-07 10:20:10
St Paul?s played host to Clan Na Gael for their second time in 3 days to open up their league campaign for the upcoming season. St Paul?s thought that they were up for a tough game due to the hard fought win on Sunday night at Pinebank against the same opposition in the prestigious feile competition. This proved not to be the case and St Paul?s ran out easy winners on the night with a twenty point margin with the final score line ending up St Paul?s (5-08) Clan Na Gael (0-03).St Paul?s played into the strong breeze in the first half and started off well after 3 minutes St Paul?s were a goal up due to a goalmouth scramble which resulted in half forward Anton Ganley finishing well to the net. St Paul?s took control of the game and were unlucky not to score after a succession of shots were put wide due to the difficult playing conditions. Clan Na Gael soon replied with a point from play from their danger man Ciaran Mc Kendry.St Paul?s captain Darragh Toal then restored the St Paul?s 3-point lead with a well taken free against the strong breeze.Soon after this the same goal scorer was on the score sheet again after he punched the ball to the net from 6 yards. Clan Na Gael then scored another good point from Ciaran Mc Kendry but Darragh Toal soon cancelled this out with another free against the breeze. Shortly after this Andrew Murnin was brought down in the box and Darragh Toal stepped up to strike the penalty to the net. This left the score line (3-02) to (0-02) in favour of the home side thanks to the tremendous defending from the St Paul?s defence who only conceded two points against the strong breeze with the half back line of Ciaran Jordan, Matthew Mc Kerr and Chris Laver all playing extremely well by getting first to every ball and winning the loose ball around the midfield area and left the full back line of Mc Caughley, Crilly and Mc Quillian with very little to deal with. The second period started off scrappy and Darragh Toal scored the first point of the second half. Andrew Murnin took his first chance of game well and he got a fist to the ball and forced it into the net leaving Clan Na Gael with no chance of getting back into the game. St Paul?s then hit a purple patch and with half forwards Daniel Mc Donald and Niall Mc Parland winning vital frees for captain Darragh Toal to score the simple enough frees and of these frees eventually found its way to the net after the Blues Keeper made a blunder. Further scores from Toal and Barry Seeley wrapped up the game for St Paul?s while Stefan Campbell added a late consolation points for the Clan?s to leave the final score (5-08) (0-03) in favour of St Paul?s.
